Green County High School faced a number of challenges in the renovation of its athletic fields, particularly with the baseball, softball, and football facilities. The project requiring a creative approach to both engineering and site management.
Challenge 1: Flat Terrain & Drainage Needs
The fields were located in a river bottom, meaning the area had very little elevation change. This was especially problematic for the softball field, where the lack of natural slope made water drainage difficult. Our team had to design an efficient drainage system that could effectively manage the water on the fields, even in these flat conditions. By carefully adjusting pipe sizes and strategically planning water flow, we developed a system that worked within the site’s constraints.
Challenge 2: Baseball Field Drainage & Existing Conditions
The baseball field presented a larger challenge, particularly due to a previously installed fence that did not meet the required elevation. Although it would have been ideal to remove and replace the fence, the school had already invested a significant amount of money in it, so replacement was not an option. Instead, we had to work with the existing conditions, adjusting our drainage and grading plan to accommodate the fence’s location while ensuring the field’s performance. This required a series of design modifications and multiple site adjustments to make sure drainage functioned properly.
Challenge 3: Complex Site Layout & Multiple Stakeholders
The athletic complex was located in a highly trafficked area, with multiple fields and the county fair site nearby. Managing drainage without affecting neighboring properties was critical. The challenge of routing water runoff from the fields and ensuring it didn’t negatively impact adjacent areas added another layer of complexity to the project.
Solution: Collaboration & Strategic Drainage Improvements
One of the key solutions involved looking at multiple areas where water drainage could be handled without causing problems for other sites. After considering several options, we reached out to a neighboring property owner for permission to run drainage lines across their land. In return, we worked together to improve their own drainage system, creating a mutually beneficial solution that helped manage the water flow from the fields.
Despite the numerous challenges—from working with existing infrastructure to managing complex drainage needs—we were able to deliver a functional and high-quality athletic complex for Green County High School. The project ultimately addressed both short-term and long-term needs, providing a safe and playable environment for student athletes.
