Eastern Kentucky University Football Field Renovation

The Project

AT A GLANCE

The renovation of Eastern Kentucky University’s football field presented several challenges, particularly during the transition from grass to synthetic turf. The project was initially complicated by discrepancies between the previous construction plans and the actual conditions on-site. The plans provided were based on a previous stadium design, but when construction began, it quickly became clear that the structural elements of the existing stadium extended further out into the field than anticipated.

CHALLENGES

Unexpected Structural Issues & Drainage Re-engineering

As we began to excavate and prepare the site, we encountered these unforeseen structural obstacles that required immediate attention. Specifically, areas of the field, particularly the visitor side, did not match what was indicated on the original drawings. This meant that we had to re-engineer the drainage system to accommodate these changes and ensure proper functionality.

This challenge was compounded by the fact that the project had a tight timeline, with no room for delays. As a design-build project, we were able to leverage our extensive experience in field construction to quickly adjust the design and keep construction moving forward, despite the unexpected issues.

SOLUTION

Innovative Drainage Design

Our solution involved redesigning the drainage system to adapt to the altered site conditions. Drawing from our deep expertise in building sports fields, we were able to develop a drainage system that would work seamlessly with the new synthetic turf and the unique requirements of the stadium. This re-engineering process allowed us to stay on schedule and deliver a high-quality field that met the client’s expectations without compromising time or performance.

Result

The result was a synthetic turf field that has now been in place for over 13 years, providing a durable and excellent performing playing surface. Despite the unforeseen challenges, the innovative drainage solution has proven to be effective, with no issues related to water management over the years. The field has remained in excellent condition, fully functional, and continues to meet the needs of the university’s athletic program.

The EKU football field project demonstrated our ability to solve unexpected challenges during construction and to adapt designs in real-time to meet the needs of the project. Thanks to our problem-solving approach, extensive experience, and design-build process, we were able to deliver a top-tier field on time—one that continues to perform well after more than a decade.
