Synthetic Turf System
Synthetic Turf
THE PROCESS
Unlike many synthetic turf suppliers who just market and supply the turf, Vescio’s SportsFields has extensive experience and will perform every aspect of the complex phases of constructing your field. We are there for every step – initial contact, preparation, earthwork, base work, synthetic turf selection, installation, and finally the finished field along with our technical support 24/7 service.
The final synthetic turf surface is important, but we believe what’s under the surface is the most significant and critical aspect of your synthetic field system – and that’s where Vescio’s SportsFields excels. Like your home, it starts with a great foundation. Our trusted experience makes us the perfect choice for builds that require and demand a lot of detail, careful consideration, and planning. Every synthetic field we build is customized to your goals and needs. For this reason, we will walk you through the following 5-step process to help you design your perfect field.
Step 1
ANSWER BASIC QUESTIONS
- What sport or sports will be played on the field? This will help determine the synthetic turf system.
- Will you host tournaments? This will determine specific field measurements to allow you to host playoffs and championships.
- What is the current field surface? This will determine the steps required to prepare for the synthetic field.
- What is the logo and color package? This is required to prepare a rendering and price quote.
- Will this project require lights, stands, scoreboards, and other additions? This is required to build a budget and project timeline.
Step 2
Select Synthetic Turf System
- Synthetic Turf - The sports played on the field and the synthetic turf blade preference will determine the synthetic turf selected. A wide variety of colors are available to customize your field color and logos.
- Infill - Any material placed among the long turf fibers that provides cushioning, traction, and proper footing for the turf system. While sand and rubber are the most popular choice, we also offer alternative infills.
- Shock Pad - Positioned under the synthetic turf and infill, the shock pad provides a consistent firm surface and can fine-tune better performance for running and cushion for falls. They also improve impact scores for both GMAX and HIC which lower the risk of injury.
Step 3
Design Phase
- Soil Evaluation – Exploration, testing, and evaluation are essential to determine the stability of the existing subbase and construction costs.
- Rock Testing/Design – Proper stone selection is important to ensure the base is stable and will drain well for the life of a field.
- Drainage System - This ensures that a field drains adequately.
- Shock Pad Selection - Positioned under the synthetic turf and infill, the shock pad provides a consistent firm surface for running and a cushion for falls. This is particularly important in the later years of the field’s life for cushioning.
- Turf Attachment System - The overall base makeup will determine the most cost-effective method to attach the synthetic turf.
Step 4
The following processes take place during the Build Phase
- Excavate to sub-grade
- Laser grade the sub-grade to specific tolerances
- Install drainage
- Install geotextile fabric
- Install turf anchoring attachment system
- Place specified gravel/stone base
- Install pad (if one is required or selected)
- Install required field equipment
- Install synthetic turf system
- Provide hands-on training with facility staff
Synthetic Turf Field Maintenance
Proper maintenance of your synthetic turf system will help ensure that your field looks good, performs well, and supports the safety of your athletes.
Vescio’s SportsFields provides hands-on demonstrations, training, and a maintenance manual with guidelines to help you keep your field performing at a championship level.
Daily Maintenance:
Daily maintenance is focused on the safety, performance, and warranty of your turf. Begin with a visual inspection of the field, looking for any damage, tears or seam separation, and low infill levels (especially in high-traffic areas) that may have developed through excessive use in repeated drill areas. Walk the field using a consistent pattern to ensure the entire field is viewed.
Weekly Maintenance:
Weekly maintenance focuses on three major aspects of the field: the condition/direction of the fibers (wear and/or separation), the infill distribution, and debris. There are three phases of weekly maintenance -inspection, surface grooming, and monitoring infill levels (especially in high-traffic areas). Keep a daily log of work performed.
Monthly Maintenance:
Monthly maintenance consists of three actions: inspection of seams and inlays, grooming/brushing, and removal of weeds/natural growth. Inspection of seams and inlays occurs exactly as it would for weekly maintenance. Walk the field paying attention to any damage or disturbed areas. Simultaneously monitor infill levels as well as the quality of the connection between inlays and the field. All inlays coming up will require immediate repair to prevent further damage and maintain a safe playing surface.
Annual Maintenance Plan:
In addition to regular weekly and monthly maintenance, an annual review and maintenance plan that includes GMAX and performance testing is essential. Deep cleaning, which is done with specialized equipment, will help preserve your synthetic turf system and ensure it performs at a championship level.
